When I signed up to be a mom I dreamed it would be magical and everything lovely. It was magical, but also very rough. My first baby, a boy named Tristan was born unhealthy and I struggled to keep him alive his first year of life. I am thankful that I was a naïve mom back then who blocked out the world to survive while caring for my sick baby boy. My baby did indeed end up having a first birthday thankfully and then another and another. Around three-years-old we finally got a diagnosis of Autism. I knew in the back of my head it was coming, but to see it on paper and hear it was a blow to my parental gut. I struggled for months after that trying to figure out if the therapies we were doing were enough, what and how would I change his/our diet, and everything else that I could control. I poured my heart and soul into him and when it was all said and done I left nothing for my husband, much less myself. As a special needs mom I know first hand how exhausting motherhood can be and how even when it seems impossible you dig deep and find that last bit of energy to care for your child. I also realize now looking back how important it is to take care of you. I do not know the statistic, but many special needs moms I know have become sick themselves because stress, lack of sleep and general lack of self care. I was one of those moms who skipped meals or ate something I could grab fast which usually was not the right foods. I never made time to workout, there was always something or someone who needed to be the priority over myself. I WAS NOT THE PRIORITY!
Start Today by Making You Matter!
A little over a month ago I had mulled over the idea of how I could give back and help more people. Then the light went on and I realized there are a lot of mom’s like me who wake up exhausted and go to bed exhausted. Why not give them a place where they were understood, where they could pour out their hearts and sweat at the same time. Special needs mom support is a must!
